Art retreat in Andalucia - June 2026
At the beautiful ‘Casa De Los Cuadros’

Botanical Art Workshop in Andalusia with Sue McHugh — June 2026
Join botanical artist Sue McHugh for an inspiring week of botanical painting in the heart of Andalusia, one of the most florally diverse regions in the world! Set in the charming white village of Villaluenga Del Rosario, you’ll stay at the beautiful Casa de los Cuadros (House of Pictures) — a spacious, traditional Andalusian guesthouse nestled in the stunning Sierra de Grazalema Natural Park, home to the rare Spanish Fir and a rich array of Mediterranean flora, not to mention the incredible localy delicacies!
This course starts each day with an exploration of traditional botanical travel-sketchbook tuition, to gather essential references, colour information and data on the subjects we will paint together. I adore this part of the process, it is a wonderful way to explore a new holiday setting together, breaking the ice of that clean white paper too! I love to have informal chats about those botanical explorers who have gone before us, setting out to discover and record new botanical species! Along the way, we will look at the work of Edward Lear and William Roscoe, both of whom took part in botanical explorations and grand tours.
Throughout the week, you will be guided through an easy to follow, step-by-step technique to creating high-impact studies of plants, flowers, and fruits gathered from the local area. With a focus on drawing from observation to capture detail, will capture form, colour and light in our paintings. I am an experienced art tutor and I am always so excited to share my techniques in a structured, yet relaxed format. My approach makes this workshop suitable for all levels — from complete beginners to more experienced artists looking to develop their skills.
“Sue is wonderfully encouraging and clear in her teaching. I’ve learned so much in a short time and feel truly inspired to continue.”
The week includes 4 days of tuition with a free mid-retreat day to explore, giving you time to relax in the garden by the pool, continue your own painting, or explore nearby towns such as Grazalema or the historic Ronda, one of Andalusia’s most iconic destinations.
